Anyone who has worked out, trained for competitive athletics or has been dedicated to their fitness for any length of time has had this happen. They've found themselves stuck, or put anther way, they've plateaued. A lot of you will likely laugh at this but it’s a real problem. Being stuck in a rut in your fitness program. I know…I know…many are struggling to start…but for those putting in the time and not getting the results this can be frustrating. You’re running and not getting faster or fitter, you’re online fitness class is not challenging you, your strength training routine is getting no results. You just find yourself unmotivated and going nowhere.
Can you relate?
If you can I'd like to share with you an idea that will help you to stay motivated and moving forward no matter what your fitness goals are.
The key idea here that you need to focus on is "Structure".
Structure is the key to success, and it's the key for you breaking through your fitness plateau. In order to stay fresh, motivated and growing in your fitness goals you need to use a concept called 'periodization'. This technique means your training calendar is divided into training cycles that dictate the intensity and form of your training in order to allow for both periods of gain but also times of recovery.
What does this look like?
You need to combine variety with structure and then change things up on a regular basis. In order to constantly see results, whether it be cutting down body fat, building muscle or running faster, we need to keep strict structure with our fitness program.
First, the most important thing is to get the nutrition part right. This means eating a structured amount of calories and macros, which tailors directly towards your goals (see my earlier blog post).
After you get the eating part right, you then have to make sure there's enough variety in your workout program. Before the lockdown whenever I was at the gym, no matter where it was, I saw the same thing: I saw people sticking to the same routine week in and week out. Same sets. Same reps. Same exercises. Same intensity. Nothing changes I've seen the same thing with runners and their run programs.
Why? Great question! It may be a lack of motivation, or a lack of guidance... either way, it must change. We need to constantly switch things up in order to shock our nervous system, and continue to progress. So, stay structured with your eating and incorporate variety with your workouts. Do that and you will see yourself climbing from peak to peak.
